Abstract: The Advanced Microwave Precipitation Radiometer (AMPR) remotely senses passive
microwave signatures of geophysical parameters from an airborne platform. The
instrument is a low noise system which can provide multifrequency microwave
imagery with high spatial and temporal resolution. AMPR data are collected at
... a combination of frequencies (10.7, 19.35, 37.1, and 85.5 GHz) unique to
current NASA aircraft instrumentation. These frequencies are well suited to
the study of rain cloud systems, but are also useful to studies of various
ocean and land surface processes.
The AMPR was deployed during the Convection and Moisture Experiment (CAMEX-1)
which were NASA funded scientific studies conducted at Wallops Island, VA.
This experiment was designed to study the three-dimensional moisture fields
using satellite, aircraft, and ground-based instrumentation and the
multifrequency radiometric and lightning signatures of tropical convection in
support of the Mission to Planet Earth. The CAMEX-1 experiment took place
between September 8 - October 7, 1993. The geographic domain of the CAMEX-1
region was between 25 degrees North to 45 degrees North latitude and 70 degrees
West to 83 degrees West longitude.
