Mooring Data for the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) Program from University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) Ocean Physics Laboratory (OPL)Entry ID: CMO_UCSB_MOORING_OPTICS
Abstract: As part of the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) Program, the University
of California, Santa Barbara, Ocean Physics Lab deployed moorings on
the New England Continental Shelf from July 1996 through June 1997.
The moorings were located 80 miles southeast of Montauk, Long Island,
and 60 miles south of Martha's Vineyard.
The overall objective of the research was to determine how particles
and optical ... properties respond to physical forcing under various
oceanic conditions on a broad continental shelf off the east coast of
The mooring was located in about 70 m of water at approximately 40.5
N, 70.5 W. BIOPS packages contained the following instruments: PAR
sensor, Lu683 sensor, fluorometer, transmissometer and temperature
sensor. BIOPS packages were deployed at 12, 30, 50 and 70 m depths.
In addition, the following instruments were also deployed on the
mooring or on the bottom tripod: acoustic doppler current profiler
(ADCP), temperature sensors, and temperature and conductivity sensors.
There were four consecutive deployments of the mooring and tripod,
each lasting approximately three months.
The instruments collected a time series of optical and physical data
from several depths. Dramatic sediment resuspension was measured
during the passage of hurricanes Edouard and Hortense in September

Use Constraints The web site of the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) Project at
University of California, Santa Barbara, is maintained for the use of
participants in the ONR-sponsored CMO program. The contents of the
site include raw data and preliminary analyses which, pending
publication, are considered proprietary by the program
participants. The availability of these data and analyses on the web
site does not imply permission for anyone outside the program to use
these data. Permission must be obtained from ONR and the individual
investigator before anyone uses these data for research purposes
outside the scope of the CMO program.
All data are preliminary and subject to change as a result of ongoing
processing and quality control.
