Abstract:
The Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) on board the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS), NOAA-9, and NOAA-10 satellites consists of two instrument packages: a scanning radiometer with three narrow-field-of-view (NFOV) sensors (0.2-5, 5-200, and 0.2-200 microns) and a nonscanning cavity radiometer which includes two fixed wide FOV sensors that view the entire disk of the Earth, two fixed medium FOV sensors limiting the view to 1000 km in diameter, and a fixed solar monitor. These missions had a design requirement of one year and a goal of two years. The ERBS spacecraft was placed in orbit in October 1984, and the instruments began operating November 1984. The NOAA-9 spacecraft was launched in December 1984, and the instruments began operating February 1985. NOAA-10 was placed in orbit in September 1986 and began operating in October 1986. The ERBE scanning radiometers operated until February 1990 on ERBS, until January 20 1987 on NOAA-9, and until May 1989 on NOAA-10. The Raw Archival Tape data set (RAT, S-1) contains raw radiometric counts for all the sensors. It also contains telemetry, ephemeris, attitude, and other housekeeping data. The Processed Archival Tape data set (PAT, S-8) contains the scanner and nonscanner radiometric measurements in engineering units, i.e., total, shortwave, and longwave (scanner only) radiances. It also contains scanner unfiltered measurements, the scene identified for each scanner pixel, estimates of the radiant exitance at the top of the atmosphere (30 km) and estimates of the radiant exitance from nonscanner instruments. Each RAT or PAT tape image contains one day's worth of data per spacecraft. The PAT is only produced for days that the scanner is operational. Tapes images are grouped by month and spacecraft and are available on 12-inch WORM optical disks that were created on Optimum drives in an Adquidneck system. The optical disk of the month also contains the combined satellite monthly products: time-space averages (S-4), Scanner Earth Radiant Exitance and Albedo (S-9) and Nonscanner Earth Radiant Exitance and Albedo (S-10). A monthly product summary is produced for the RAT and PAT data, which includes an explanation of the data coverage for the month. |
