ACAP Saint John's Community Environmental Monitoring Program (CEMP)Entry ID: gomc_323
Abstract: Parameters measured included: ammonia nitrogen, orthophosphate,
dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, salinity, faecal coliform.
Purpose: The summer of 2004 marked the twelfth year of ACAP Saint John's
Community Environmental Monitoring Program. The summer program included 37
monitoring locations with over 60 volunteers from local community groups,
organizations and concerned citizens. The samples collected by the volunteers
were analyzed by the New Brunswick Community College in Saint John by Chemical
... Technology co-op students. The results from this program are widely used by
ACAP stake holders and other groups interested in water quality. Site
observations made during sampling are also useful in determining anomalies in
the immediate environment during the sampling season. The baseline data
collected from this project has allowed ACAP Saint John to detect changes in
these waterways and to promote public awareness. By identifying the areas of
contamination, ACAP Saint John has taken the first step in determining the
proper course of action to prevent further degradation of our waterways.
