Summary

Abstract: The compiled data for the Icebreaker ARA "Almirante Irizar" (RHAI)
during her 2 stage of the Summer Antarctic Campaign 1996/1997 are
analyzed to understand the interactions of the sea ice with
astronomic, meteorological and oceanographic components, in order to
interpret the epi-sode of unusual severity, of among the 25 years
past, of 10/10 of multiyears ice and more than of 6 meters of
thickness, in the Weddell Southeastern sea. Formidable natural
obstacles and especial environmental conditions were confirmed,
forcing to operate with new procedures of interpretation of apt zones
for navigation on the basis of selected parameters, achieving
satisfactory results.
