Vent GIS Data: Juan de Fuca Ridge
Entry ID:
VENTS_GIS_Juan
Summary
Abstract:
Hydrothermal vent locations have been determined by visits to the site
using various underwater instruments including submarines and remotely operated vehicles. Positions are determined acoustically in a relative X-Y grid and then translated into geographic positions based on the transponder positions. The most reliable navigation from a site visit is used as the vent's position. The Axial volcano is seamount at 46 degrees North, 130 degrees West, at the intersection of the Juan de Fuca Ridge and the Cobb seamount chain. It rises 1100 m above the surrounding ocean floor to a minimum depth of 1400 m below sea level. All vent data is available in a shape file.
