S'COOL - Students' Cloud Observations On-Line - is a project which involves school children in real science. They provide ground truth (calibration) measurements such as cloud cover, type, and height to assist in the validation of the CERES instrument. They can also compare the surface- and space-based observations to learn more about clouds and ... climate.
Qualifications for the project include any primary or secondary school teacher and their class. S'COOL recommends that students be at least 9 - 10 years old, but younger students are welcome if the teacher feels it appropriate. If selected, participants will receive some instructional materials, satellite overpass times, and information necessary for reporting results. Particpating classes record basic weather observations at the time that the satellite passes over their location. Observations are then either entered in an online form, emailed, faxed or mailed to NASA for entry into an online database. Students have access to their results as well as those from other participating schools. Some satellite observations for matching times will also be captured so that the students and CERES scientists can evaluate the results.
