Summary
Abstract: Biotas is a statistical and GIS tool for Windows written for ecologists and
resource professionals. Biotas has been designed to assist in the analysis and
understanding of spatial and temporal data from biogeographical and ecological
studies including, but not limited to, those dealing with wildlife (home range,
habitat use, etc.), fisheries (movements), plant or animal ecology (spatial
randomness tests).

As a GIS program Biotas can import coverages for visual display or
incorporation into analysis. Biotas goes beyond simple GIS by integrating
spatial and temporal statistical analyses and simulation capabilities.

Quality After some delays, new efforts are being applied to Biotas to
complete the list of functions. Below is a short list of those
functions "in the works". With a new rigorous time table being
applied to Biotas, most or all are expected to be online.

Johnson's nonparametric test
linear regression
nonlinear regression
temporal and spatial modeling
simulated landscapes
habitat models
nearest neighbor analysis: linear (streams, roads, etc.) and 2D functions
refined nearest neighbor analysis
reflexive nearest neighbor analysis
Access Constraints Biotas accepts location data (also known as point pattern data) as either
query files or database tables in either *.dbf (DBase), *.xls (Excel) or ASCII
file formats. Full SQL (Structured Query Language) use is supported. Biotas
exports location data variables in ASCII, *.dbf, and *db formats, as well as
Windows clipboard copy and paste functions. Importation support for coverages
includes ArcView shape files, MapInfo Interchange format and *.dxf files.
Biotas exports coverages (such as generated home range contours)as ArcView
Shape files, ArcInfo compatible text files or as *.dxf files.
