Abstract:
Student's On-Line Atmospheric Research (SOLAR) is a NASA sponsored Educational Outreach Program. If you are a K-12 science teacher looking for ways to engage your students in learning activities that will enhance their understanding of, and appreciation for, science topics related to the Earth's atmosphere you have come to the right place. SOLAR is the outreach component of the Stratospheric ... Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) III, one of NASA's Earth Observing System's satellite experiments. Topics for SOLAR educational materials and activities include aerosols, clouds, ozone, and other trace gases in the atmosphere measured by SAGE III. SOLAR conducts a teacher workshop and other special presentations that are geared toward familiarizing science teachers with NASA's research in these areas. The workshops and presentations also focus on helping teachers integrate SOLAR topics into their curriculum and aligning the topics with standards of learning. SOLAR emphasizes activities designed to give students hands-on experiences with scientific equipment, and to teach them scientific inquiry and methods of scientific investigation. For example, SOLAR features a sun photometer experiment for middle and high school students and an aerosol lab activity for grades 3-5. SOLAR also facilitates an essay contest for all grades K-12.
