Abstract: The Sentinel Fire Mapping website is an internet-based mapping tool designed to
provide timely fire location data to emergency service managers across
Australia. The mapping system allows users to identify fire locations that pose
a potential risk to communities and property. It can be accessed using a
standard web browser.
Sentinel Fire currently obtains data from the NASA Earth Observation Satellite
Terra. Plans are well advanced to include data from other satellites in the
The satellite orbits the Earth collecting data in a path 2330 km wide. It
passes over Australia at least once a day but sometimes the track alignment
provides up to three passes. You can get details of where the satellite passes
overhead each day from the Space Science and Engineering Centre for Terra ?
Australian tracking predictions website.
The raw image data is received by the Australian Centre for Remote Sensing
(ACRES) Data Acquisition Facility at Alice Springs. The data is processed by a
dedicated server to create a surface temperature image known as the MOD14
product. The algorithms used in producing the thermal image are described on
the NASA MODIS Fire and Thermal Anomalies webpage.
Locations of high temperature are identified and extracted from the image into
a small text file and transmitted from Alice Springs to Canberra where they are
fed into a spatial database. From there the data can be queried and added to
dynamically created maps using a web-based mapping system.
Users can access the map website with a standard browser to query the database
for fire locations, and select layers of contextual information to create map
displays of areas of interest.

Quality The user needs to be aware that information on this website is dependent on the
availability and functioning of satellites. The quality and geo-positional
accuracy of the information cannot be guaranteed. Information may therefore be
outdated, inaccurate or incomplete at the time of using this website due to
... circumstances existing at that time such as unavailability of or delay in data
supply from satellites, inability to obtain precise data caused by the inherent
spatial inaccuracies of satellite sensors or inability to obtain complete data
due to the prevailing weather conditions at the time of over-flight.
No reliance or actions must therefore be made on this information without
seeking prior expert professional, scientific and technical advice to determine
the identification and actual cause of the "hotspot" and without carrying out
on the ground surveillance and investigations.
