NASA Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT)
Entry ID: SPoRT-NASA

Summary
Abstract: High-resolution meteorological forecasts are produced twelve times daily by the Pennsylvania State University/National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU/NCAR) mesoscale model (MM5v3.4).

The PSU/NCAR mesoscale model is a limited-area, nonhydrostatic or hydrostatic (Version 2 only), terrain-following sigma-coordinate model designed to simulate or predict mesoscale and regional-scale atmospheric circulation.

The Model is run on 6 processors on 8-CPU SGI Origin 2000. The 48-h and 12-h forecasts take approximately 2.5 and 0.5 wall clock hours to complete, respectively. Images for the Web Site are produced "on-the-fly" during model execution. The first images of a forecast are typically posted about 20 minutes after the model has started. Images are produced with the GEneral Meteorology PacKage (GEMPAK) software.

Description: The PSU/NCAR mesoscale model is a limited-area, nonhydrostatic or hydrostatic (Version 2 only), terrain-following sigma-coordinate model designed to simulate or predict mesoscale and regional-scale atmospheric circulation. It has been developed at Penn State and NCAR as a community mesoscale model and is continuously being improved by contributions from users at several universities and government laboratories.

Description: GEMPAK, the GEneral Meteorology PAcKage, is a suite of applications programs, libraries, graphic routines, and device drivers for the decoding, analysis, display and diagnosis of geo-referenced and meteorological data. GEMPAK provides a comprehensive set of meteorological parameter calculations for surface, upper-air, gridded, and remotely sensed data.
