map Time Smoothing for Giovanni-3
Entry ID: G3_mapTimeSmoothing

[ Get Service ]
[ Update this Record ]

Summary
Abstract: The mapTimeSmooth service for G3 takes a series of grids as an input and
computes a series of smoothed grids as the output. The output values are the
result of applying a simple boxcar filter to the series of input grids, where
the units of the filtering dimension are individual files.

Input parameters:
Geophysical variables

Output ...
Smoothed variable array

Output Parameters:
Same as input parameters

File Type:
Input and output files are in HDF4.

Sub-definitions:

  • Grid: two-dimensional data structure (an array of measurements represented on
    an area map)

  • Longitude: horizontal dimension of grid

  • Latitude: vertical dimension of grid

  • Pixel: individual grid data element

Service Description:

  1. Input files are treated in groups, of size equal to the smoothing window, and
the average grid is computed for that group.

  2. Output the average grids as a three-dimensional grid in the
    output file.

  3. The number of output grids n_output is:
    n_output = n_input - (smoothingWindow - 1)

where n_input is the number of input grids, and smoothingWindow
is the number of grids used in each smoothing interval.

Algorithm Details
Essentially this service is performed by repeated applications of the map Time
Average service. since the filter window moves, there is usually more than one
output grid produced.

he averaging service takes care of the required subsetting and weighting,
while the smoothing service merely acts as a controlling element, passing
the sets of files for each smoothing window to the averaging service, along
with the required weighting and geographic subsetting parameters.

The averaging service also handles the details of collapsing three-
dimensional input arrays into two-dimensional arrays.

Caveats/Warnings:

Origin/Software:
Implemented in IDL

User Options

  • Weighting using auxiliary grids which contain the number of measurements
used to generate the input grids.

  • Users must specify a width for the filter window (the default value is 3,
which represents smoothing using three files at a time).
