Summary
Abstract: The Reef Resilience (R2) Toolkit is a product developed for coral reef managers providing guidance on building resilience to climate change into the design of MPAs, as well as on daily management activities. Guidance provided ranges from conserving fish spawning aggregations, to MPA network design, to developing coral reef monitoring programs.

History:

The first Reef Resilience Toolkit (v1) was produced in 2003, with a second version developed and more widely distributed in 2004 (v2). The current version seeks to capture the tremendous growth in coral reef resilience science. Along with new discoveries, managers have worked to build resilience into their management activities on the ground and in the water. We incorporate their lessons learned by way of recommendations and case studies in this toolkit. Finally, users of the R2 Toolkit will notice improvements in the structure and navigation of this version. These improvements and updates were made in response to user feedback. Please feel free to provide feedback on your experience and use of this toolkit.

Using the Toolkit:

The toolkit is divided into two modules, Coral Reefs and Fish Spawning Aggregations; both follow the same structure. They are designed in a sequential format, and we suggest users review the sections in the order presented. Each module begins with introductory information defining a problem and providing background about the system and issues. The Introduction is followed by sections that provide specific guidelines on implementing resilience-based management. For example, the introduction to the Coral Reefs module focuses on the problem of climate change and coral bleaching, followed by guidance on how to design MPAs and networks to anticipate climate change. This in turn is followed by case studies demonstrating how managers are implementing these approaches.
