Harmful Algal Bloom Mapping System

Summary
Abstract: The Harmful Algal Bloom Mapping System (HAB) is an interactive mapping tool
that can be used to access recent data on harmful algal blooms in the Gulf of
Mexico and on the environmental conditions that may affect the spread of these
blooms.

This interactive mapping tool is powered by ESRI's ArcIMS and users can use the
tool to select data layers, zoom in and out of areas, pan around different
areas, query data by location and data type, and print custom maps.

Brief Description of Data Layers:

Sea Surface Temperature
Sea surface temperature (SST) images from the previous three days are
available. The imagery is processed and provided by NOAA CoastWatch and is
updated nightly. The date of each SST image is stamped on the top left-hand
corner of the image. The images are one-kilometer resolution, obtained from the
Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) mounted on the NOAA Polar
Operational Environmental Satellites (POES).

Buoy Winds
The wind data provided from buoys are averaged wind speed (meters per second)
and direction readings from NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) buoys in the
Gulf of Mexico. The buoy-winds data layer is updated every 6 hours. The
directions of the vectors represent the wind direction, and the sizes of the
barbs indicate the wind speed.

Buoy Currents
Surface-current data are averaged speed (centimeters per second) and direction
readings from the Texas Automated Buoy System (TABS) in the Gulf of Mexico. The
currents are updated every 6 hours. The directions of the vectors represent the
surface-current direction, and the sizes of the barbs indicate the
surface-current speed.

Satellite Winds
Wind direction and speed as recorded by the SeaWinds instrument on the NASA
Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) satellite are available for the last 33 hours.
The time recorded in the legend is Greenwich Mean Time. The colors designate
the velocity in meters per second, and the wind-barb shows the direction. This
information is provided by NOAA Coastwatch, and is updated nightly.

Cell Counts
Results of the most recent in situ sampling for red tide cells are obtained
from the Florida Marine Research Institute. The current and previous datasets
are available in the mapping applications. Information is updated as it becomes
available.

Bathymetry Contours
This layer contains depth contours ranging from 50 to 3,000 meters. These data
were generated from a map created for the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Shellfish Areas
This layer depicts the location of shellfish beds in the Gulf of Mexico as
represented in the National Shellfish Register of Classified Growing Waters,
published most recently in 1995 by NOAA's Office of Ocean Resources
Conservation and Assessment (ORCA). The growing waters of the beds are
classified based on water quality
