Blue Sky Rains: A Web-Based Information System to Help Manage Prescribed Burning, Wildland Fires and Agricultural Burning
Entry ID: BLUE_SKY_RAINS
Summary
Abstract:
Blue Sky Rains was developed by the USDA Forest Service to predict surface smoke concentrations from prescribed fire, wildfire and by integrating with the ClearSky system, agricultural fire. The results of BlueSky are viewed via RAINS (the Rapid Access Information System), a system developed by the EPA which relies upon ArcIMS, ArcSDE and MS SQL server technology. Thus, BlueSkyRAINS merges the technology of RAINS with the latest available science and knowledge regarding fire and smoke dispersion from the BlueSky framework to yield an interactive web-based regional forecast of smoke concentrations overlain on a variety of sensitive receptors. In this way, land managers, regulators, and the general public can view the potential smoke impacts from regional burning activities.
