Summary
Abstract: The Pacific Disaster Center's (PDC) Asia Pacific Natural Hazards and
Vulnerabilities Atlas is an interactive, geospatial mapping tool and database
for natural hazards and vulnerabilities information within the Asia Pacific and
Indian Ocean regions. The Hazards Atlas can be used by researchers, planners,
managers, and decision makers in the disaster management community to gain
greater awareness of the risks of natural hazards in their area of concern and
may be used to determine the likelihood and potential impact of such events.

The Atlas may be used to enhance decision-makers ability to answer operational
questions such as:

-What hazards are likely to occur in this region, and with what frequency and
intensity?

-Where are current hazard events and what is their extent?

-How many people can be, or are, affected?

The Atlas utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies to
integrate and display locations, magnitudes, and dates of hazard events,
delineate regional natural hazard phenomenon, and depict historical trends. The
Atlas combines baseline geographic and infrastructure data layers with
historical as well as near-real time data on natural hazard events including:
earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and tropical storms.

Atlas Data:

The Asia Pacific Natural Hazards and Vulnerabilities Atlas offers an integrated
collection of geospatial hazards, vulnerabilities, and infrastructure data by
bringing together a number of previously disparate data resources and
information into a common framework. The data have been processed to, and are
displayed in, a Mercator projection (150 degrees West, WGS84).
