Summary

Abstract: The primary goal of this collaborative proposal is the creation of a “Community Ice Sheet Model (CISM)”. This will be a community developed, open access, ice sheet model similar in function to what was used in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) simulations. The development process will stress principles of software design in order to assure that CISM is accurate, robust, well ...

Purpose: The focus of the educational effort from the UTEP team is to develop curriculum and informational products for dissemination in order to take polar science directly into the classroom. The educational materials, centered on high school standards in science, have been entitled “The Changing Poles” and have now been completely developed as student classroom activities (Appendix A) and a ... corresponding teacher manual (Appendix B). The work of the new graduate student for the final months of the project was focused on finalizing the teacher materials and resources, as well as the formatting of the materials and resources for publication on the Web.

The purpose will be to provide curriculum products for dissemination in order to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts associated with Problem-Based Learning (PBL) within a polar science topic that is appropriate for the student learning. The goal of the educational effort of this project is to have the team finalize the PBL curriculum materials for both teachers and students that are aligned National Science Standards. The Changing Poles PBL also integrates the EduISIS software and provides activities for students and teachers to use in the classroom that emphasize computer modeling of ice sheets and polar phenomenon. The team has designed and developed the materials for the Changing Poles PBL, and through our collaborative networks associated with this project, plan to implement them publically via the Web.

The change in climate patterns that our planet is experiencing has been a topic of great interest over the past years. Scientist, politicians, and the general community have become interested in understanding how the Earth climate systems works, if it has been altered by human activities, and if these changes will affect the stability of our planet, country, and local community. Through the use of computer models, it is now possible to predict how small changes in the average temperature and snow accumulation can have a great impact in important regions such as the Earth’s poles.

The Changing Poles unit engages high school grade (9th to 12th) students to explore the important role that ice sheet play in maintaining the Earth’s climate system. The goal is for students to understand that global climate is determined by the energy transfer from the sun and the interactions that occur between and influenced by natural processes, human interactions and that with the use of models it is possible to predict future climate patterns and outcomes.
