CiteBank is an open access platform to aggregate citations for biodiversity publications and deliver access to biodiversity related articles. CiteBank aggregates links to content from digital libraries, publishers, and other bibliographic systems in order to provide a single point of access to the world’s biodiversity literature. CiteBank also stores and provides access to content, such as articles or chapters relevant to biodiversity, contributed by publishers and other copyright holders. CiteBank is a project of the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL).|
Goals of CiteBank
(1) Provide robust search &browse capabilities to biodiversity publications stored in multiple international repositories. Many initiatives have begun digitizing journals, monographs, and individual articles of importance to biological sciences, including emerging publishing systems that provide completely electronic, online access. CiteBank intends to aggregate content from as many systems as possible, so that biodiversity researchers have a single point of access to published materials.
(2) Provide storage platform for articles & documents digitized, but not yet online. In addition to the initiatives described above, many publishers and individual researchers have PDFs or other electronic documents, but lack a system in which they can make these materials available online. CiteBank provides a storage and dissemination platform for these materials, along with the ability to accurately describe them using bibliographic standards.
(3) Provide a common system for scholars to share their specialist bibliographies. CiteBank contains functionality for users to upload, edit, and share their own personal lists of references and citations. These references will be linked to scanned content in the Biodiversity Heritage Library portal at http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org when available.
(4) Provide article-level access to BHL scanned volumes. BHL currently contains interfaces and services that allow users to create their own PDF articles. These documents are retained when appropriate metadata have been provided and are made available to other users through CiteBank.
