Getty's Online Thesaurus of Geographic Names
Entry ID: 01-GeogName-99

Summary
Abstract: (Summary adapted from Getty Rearch Institute's web site)

The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN) contains approximately 900,000
records for places, arranged in hierarchies representing all nations of the
modern world, and including vernacular and historical names, coordinates, place
types, and other relevant information. Displayed records may contain one or
more places which are arranged in hierarchies representing the current
political and physical world.

From a free text search, a list of matched records is displayed which contain
links to additional information. Records can be selected singularly or
aggregated to view their place name, place coordinates, geographic hierarchical
position, and place type.

Records showing place names often have associated display dates, which are
short notes describing when the name was used (e.g. medieval, Roman.) The
record also includes the institution that contributed the name, and also
generally supplies the bibliographic source of the name. Places can be either
physical or political entities. They include physical features such as
continents, rivers, and mountains; and political entities, such as empires,
nations, states, districts, townships, cities, and neighborhoods. Some TGN
records include a note that provides additional information about the place, or
expands on information in other fields.

humanities, to bridge traditional academic boundaries, and to provide a unique
environment for research, critical inquiry, and debate. Integral to its
interdisciplinary approach is the concept that visual arts and artifacts should
be assessed within the broad historical and cultural contexts in which they
were created. The Institute's Research Library - accessible to both on-site and
remote users - supports scholars and researchers around the world.
