Summary
Abstract: Progressive Curvature Filtering (PCF) is an iterative, multiscale approach for
finding positive curvatures representing non-ground returns in discrete return
LiDAR. The complex vertical arrangement of LiDAR data requires an iterative
processing approach to converge on an accurate solution of identified ground
returns. Through nested iterations, the PCF algorithm robustly addresses
topologic relationships across scales. Exploiting scale and topological
relationships enables removal of a large portion of the low level surface
modulation that other filtering approaches often miss, while simultaneously
maintaining a high volume of ground returns. The implementation of PCF employs
simple model parameters and a minimum of input data, providing flexibility and
repeatability across data sets. The PCF model is currently implemented in Arc
Macro Language (AML) for workstation Arc/Info. Development is under way to
convert the model into IDL and possibly VB as an extension for ArcGIS.
