Summary
Abstract: The Last of the Wild Dataset of the Last of the Wild Project, Version 2, 2005 (LWP-2) is derived from the LWP-2 Human Footprint Dataset. The gridded data are classified according to their raster value (wild = 0-10; not wild >10). The ten largest polygons of more than 5 square kilometers within each biome by realm are selected and identified. The dataset is produced by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).

The global shapefiles (SHP) in the Interrupted Goode Homolosine Projection (IGHP) are available from the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC).

Purpose: To provide an updated map of wild areas in Interrupted Goode Homosoline Projection which can be used for wildlife conservation planning, natural resource management, and research on human-environment interactions.

Quality To reproduce this dataset, the following steps are recommended: 1) Classify the Human Footprint grid according to raster value (wild = 0-10; not wild >10). 2) Eliminate all polygons <5 square kilometers. Changes from the LWP 2002 to LWP 2005 include the following: 1) The populated and USGS urban polygons layers are replaced by CIESIN Global Rural Urban Mapping Project (GRUMP) urban extent layer. 2) The USGS Global land Cover Characteristics layer is replaced with EU Joint Research Centre Global Land Cover 2000 dataset. 3) The roads layer is updated using Latin America and Carribean Roads data compiled by Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT). Africa roads are updated from compilation of Africa roads data by Andy Nelson.
