Abstract:
INDICATOR DEFINITION
The composition and quantity of the Australian Antarctic Division's sewer outflow.
TYPE OF INDICATOR
There are three types of indicators:
1.Describes the CONDITION of important elements of a system;
2.Show the extent of the major PRESSURES exerted on a system;
3.Determine RESPONSES to either condition or changes in the condition of a system.
This indicator is one of:
... PRESSURE
RATIONALE FOR INDICATOR SELECTION
Analysis of the sewer outflows are undertaken on an annual basis for comparison with previous analyses and the standards set down by state and municipal governments.
The quantity of outflow allows some measurement of the impact the operation of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) has on the environment and local waterways.
DESIGN AND STRATEGY FOR INDICATOR MONITORING PROGRAM
Site:
The Australian Antarctic Division, Kingston Tasmania.
Frequency:
Sewer analysis - annual measurements
Outflow volumes - measured daily
Measurement Technique:
Based on DPIWE guidelines for maximum levels of pollutants in sewer outflows.
Sewer analysis - samples are taken from the AAD sewer pit, which is the last point prior to transfer to the local treatment plant.
Outflow volume - Daily readings of the pump time (in hours) which is multiplied by the volume of the pump to give total volume of outflow each day.
