Abstract:
A qualitative and quantitative survey was made of algae in aquatic habitats on the McMurdo Ice Shelf. The majority of the work was conducted in eight ponds of diverse chemical characteristics in the vicinity of Bratina Island off the northen tip of Brown Peninsula. ... microscope work was conducted in the field. A simple counting method was used to assess the relative abundance of different taxa in samples of benthic algae for several varying ponds. Individuals of the different species of algae were counted until a total of 100 individuals had been observed. The algae in samples collected along transects at six widely spaced locations on the ice shelf were assessed in a more subjective manner with the abundance of different taxa being estimated on a five point scale. A systematic list was created.
