Abstract:
The phytoplankton and zooplankton in shallow water at Cape Bird was investigated. Samples were taken at intervals of 4 days from early December to late January in plastic buckets from the fast ice in water up to 1m depth. Phytoplankton was studied from the aspects of standing crop and productivity. The standing crop was measured by microscopal examination and direct cell counts, and chlorophyll
... and carotenoid analysis of the seawater by a spectrophotometric method. Productivity was measured by the light and dark bottle technique. Zooplankton standing crop was estimated by direct counts of species and dry weights of the macro zooplankton. A near complete set of samples was taken 4 hourly for a 24 hour period in water of 8m depth and analysed to investigate the possibility of diurnal changes in the zooplankton composition.
