Abstract:
Four satellite transmitters were deployed on female Adelie penguins during the incubation period. The transmitters were affixed to the backs of the penguins using an epoxy glue. The birds were banded, weighed and had the transmitters fitted before they began egg laying. Nests were checked several times each day to ascertain time of egg laying, time of departure and time of return. In addition, a control group of six nests was monitored in the same way. This was to assess possible effects that carrying transmitters might have on the behaviour of foraging penguins. Penguins were tracked while away for 24-29 days. Complete tracks were obtained for 2 birds and two transmitters failed.
