Abstract:
Algae populations at different points on a latitudinal gradient within the Ross Sea sector were investigated. At Cape Hallett, the distribution of the different algal communities were mapped by a survey of the area in 10 m x 10 m squares to encompass the area studied previously (1963). The maps were scanned to produce and electronic layered map of each community type.Temperature, pH and electrical
... conductivity was measured in streams and pools in the Cape Hallett region and from Luther Lake. 24 samples of algae (eukaryotic and cyanobacteria) were collected from Cape Hallett, and 15 samples (almost entirely cyanobacteria) from Luther Lake. These samples will be used to obtain unialgal cultures of algae for DNA analysis. In addition, samples were also received/collected from Bratina Island and the Garwood, Miers and Taylor Valleys. Expected long-term results will be a DNA fingerprint and sequencing library matching morphological descriptions for these organisms as a starting point for the study of distribution, dispersal and genetic isolation of common algal taxa along a latitudinal gradient.
