Abstract:
A new acoustic wind profiler was tested in the Wright Valley on the slopes of Mount Odin. This instrument may have the advantage of providing continuous vertical profiles of wind speed and direction and being portable should be useable at a number of sites. Fixed instrument sites were established at 95m (Vanda Station), 200m, 750m and 1070m up the face of Mount Odin in the Wright Valley. These
... sites measured wind speed and direction and dry bulb temperature. In addition to the data collection at fixed sites, two traverses were completed on foot and measurements taken using hand held instruments. Two days were also spent trekking down the valley, taking measurements with hand held instruments and becoming familiar with the terrain. The instrument was tested for consistent operation at Vanda station, and then installed at a site 750m up Mount Odin. It operated successfully at this site, as evidence by real time video display. Unfortunately, an in the field software change to compress the data on disk caused total loss of data from the profiler from this site.
