Summary
Abstract:
As part of the European QUOBI project (Quantitative Understanding of Ozone losses by Bipolar Investigations), 9 stations around Antarctica were involved in a coordinated 'Match' campaign involving launching an ozonesonde (a small ozone-measureing instrument borne on a balloon) from one station, then launching another from the same or another station when trajectory modelling showed the sampled air ... parcel to have moved over the station (= a 'match'). The aim of this process is to remove the dynamical effects so as to better understand the chemical effects going on inside the air parcel and to understand how the models quantify the ozone loss process. Approximately 30 balloons were launched between June and August from McMurdo Station and each balloon was tracked from the station to approximately 30km in height. The data shows the first hints OF ozone loss occurring and temperature and pressure profiles encountered on the way up.
