Summary
Abstract:
Gases, aerosol properties and local weather was studied at sites around Ross Island and in McMurdo Sound as part of a programme to describe the properties of the atmospheric aerosol (and gases), to determine how these change in space and time, and to study their effects on physical and chemical processes in the atmosphere. Reasonably long continuous surface based measurements were made at three ... sites near Ross Island (Ross Ice Shelf, McDonalds Beach, Bratina Island) and at Butters Point in New Harbour. Local weather conditions and the atmospheric boundary layer at the field sites was studied. Measurements made include: particle size and number concentration (0.1 to 3µm), condensation nuclei concentration, surface ozone concentration, surface wind speed and direction (at the site continuously and around the local area), three hourly weather observations, vertical profiles to 1000 m (of wind speed, direction, temperature and humidity), three axis winds from the 4m mast, turbulence and stability parameters, heat flux, atmospheric stability, net radiation, turbidity, particle fluxes and rawinsonde flights to 5000 m. Filter samples were collected and analysed for ice nuclei, bulk aerosol composition and bulk optical properties and particle samples were collected on electron microscope grids. Gas samples were collected in canisters.
