Abstract:
The transport of pollutants from an occupied Antarctic Station (Scott Base) to the surrounding snow was investigated. Density balloons were tracked constantly at low levels throughout the area in light winds to establish details of the local air flows. 35 tetrahedral balloons were flown during the first 12 days of December, 1994 and the likely sites of impact of the station plume on adjacent snowfields were determined. Chemical analyses of ice cores from permanent snow near the downwind trajectories of the base were conducted. Aerosol studies and chemical analysis for ionic components was completed.
