The photosynthetic performance (photosynthesis response curves to light and water content at various temperatures) of the pale and dark forms of the lichen Usnea spacelata from Cape Royds
Abstract:
The photosynthetic performance of the fruticose lichen Usnea sphacelata was measured using advanced, climatised photosynthetic cuvettes at Scott Base. Individuals of the Usnea sp were identified and collected and their distribution recorded at Cape Royds. Two forms, a pale shade form and a dark sun form were identified. Specimens were removed and used for gas-exchange studies. Full photosynthetic response curves to light were obtained for the dark and pale forms at 10, 5, 0, -5 and -10°C. A photosynthesis to thallus water content curve was also produced for both dark and pale forms.

The plant collections (~30,000 mosses, liverwort and lichens collected by Professor Rod Seppelt from Antarctica and sub-Antarctic Islands) are housed in the Australian Antarctic Division herbarium. This herbarium is being formerly transferred to the Tasmanian Herbarium. As specimens are ... fully incorporated into the herbarium (ADT) the data is automatically sent to and held in the Antarctic Database at the Australian Antarctic Division Data Centre. The data is currently in two separate databases, one which searchable and the other is in the process of being moved over.
