Abstract:
The Cook College Remote Sensing Center of Rutgers University and the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (USA/CERL) have
signed a cooperative agreement that will allow Rutgers to make available the
CERL Global GRASS digital data set on CD-ROM. The 1st CD-ROM includes
elevation, soils, national boundaries, cultivation intensity, marine
... productivity, and world ecosystems. The 2nd CD-ROM includes temperature,
precipitation, cloud cover, soil elements, watersheds, and rivers. The 3rd
CD-ROM contains 53 weekly vegetation productivity files from 1988. The 1st
CD-ROM costs $375; the 2nd $300; and the 3rd $250. You can purchase all 3
CD-ROM's for $750.
Each CD-ROM contains at least 50 raster global data files, with cell
size 4'48', for use in global scale research and education. They are
stored in GRASS 4.0 directory structure as uncompressed flat ascii
files for immediate use with GRASS 4.0 latitude/longitude analysis,
and can be used with other GIS systems, such as IDRISI.
Contents of CD-ROM 1:
. Surface Albedo for January, April, July and October (Matthews, 1983)
. ETOPO5 (NGDC) Coral Reef Distribution (Times Atlas of the Oceans)
. Primary Cover/Vegetation Types (NOAA) Major World
. Ecosystem Complexes (Olson/ORNL) Biomass Production (Olson)
. Major World Fisheries Area (FAO Atlas of the Living Resources of the Seas)
. Green Turtle Distribution and Characteristics (Atlas of Animal Migration)
. Ocean Bio-geographic Zones Based on Surface Temperature (Times Atlas of the
Oceans)
. Biological Ocean Zones Ocean Floor
. Biomass Production (Times Atlas of the Oceans)
. Marine Conservation Projects (Times Atlas of the Oceans)
. General Range of Sea Otters (Times Atlas of the Oceans)
. Ocean Productivity (CZCS)
. Phytoplankton Productivity (FAO Atlas of the Living Resources of the Seas)
. Soil Map (FAO 1974 Soil Map of the World and Matthews, 1983)
. World Soil Groups (same as above)
. Soil Texture Groups (same as above)
. Soils for GCMs (NOAA)
. Topographic Maps (ETOPO5)
. Natural Vegetation (UNESCO and Matthews, 1983)
. Abundance of Zooplankton (FAO Atlas of the Living Resources of the Seas)
. Normalized vegetation for each month (AVHRR 4/1984-12/1988)
CD-ROM 2 Contents
. 53 Weekly vegetation productivity files from 1988 from AVHRR Normalized
Vegetation Index (NVI)
CD-ROM 3 Contents
. Monthly Temperature Files (IIASA)
. Monthly Precipitation Files (IIASA)
. Monthly Cloud Cover Files (IIASA)
. Bathymetry (ETOPO5)
. Watershed Files
. Soils data (FAO)
. Ridge systems file (USACERL)
. Rivers Files (World Database II)
. Relief Maps
. Mountains
. Urbanized File (NCAR)
To users of the public domain GRASS GIS and image processing system, the CD-ROM
will act as an additional hard disk, since the data are stored in the GRASS
directory structure. GRASS now has a full set of global (latitude/longitude)
analysis capabilities.
