Seismic, bathymetry and piston coring transects were undertaken in the Cape Royds area to determine how sediment was moving over the sea floor of this area to the 900m deep Erebus basin offshore. Bathymetric surveys of the inshore area were carried out using a survey boat and echosounder. A seismic line was run across McMurdo Sound to intersect the CIROS-1 site and lines were also run in the New Harbour-Marble Point area to study sediment accumulation in the sea floor depressions of the area. A large sediment trap was deployed from the fast ice edge in 520 m water depth and collected later in the season. The studies undertaken here were in conjunction with Rice University (Houston, Texas).
