Summary
Abstract: This experiment began in 1956 at a cold temperate boreal site. The
location is an arable farm field, several hundred years under
cultivation. The soil at the site is described as a Medudalf.

The rotations and treatments in the experiment are as follows:

Field 1: 9 year rotation since 1965 - alfalfa, alfalfa, w.wheat,
w.wheat, s.barley, potato., w.wheat, w.wheat, s.barley. Fields 2, 3 &
4 (and 1 to 5 until 1964): 9 yr rotation - alfalfa, alfalfa, w.wheat,
s.beet, s.barley, potato, w.wheat, s.beet, s.barley. Field 5 (since
1965): 2 yr rotation - spring wheat, sugar beet: Treatments for all
fields various combinations of nil inputs, inorganic fertilizer only,
straw incorporation, farmyard manure, dungwater+straw, pig slurry,
cattle slurry, cattle slurry+straw, compost, poultry slurry.

The measurements made, frequency, and methodology are listed below:

a) Vegetation measurements made and frequency

Yield: yearly
Total above-ground dry matter: yearly
Total dry matter offtake: yearly
Nitrogen content of offtake: yearly
P, K, Ca, Mg - content of offtake; yearly

b) Soil sampling

Note: there are several archive samples from 70th and 80th and block 5
(2 year crop rotation)
Details of soil sampling method: Spade, 0-22 cm, 4-8 cores from each
plot. The cores are mixed.
Details of measuring depths and soil layers: Note: There are a
few occasional samplings into layers up to 100cm, separation 0-20,
20-60 and 60-100 cm.

c) Soil measurements made and frequency

Total carbon: yearly
Method of measuring total carbon: Wet combustion with potassium
bichromate; since 1995 LECO analyser
Biomass carbon: since 1994
Method of measuring biomass carbon: Fumigation - extraction method
Carbon measurements in other organic matter fractions: since 1994
Method of measuring carbon in other organic matter fractions: Hot
water soluble carbon
Carbon dioxide evolution: block B, twice per year
Method of measuring carbon dioxide evolution: disturbed soil samples,
laboratory measurements
Total nitrogen: yearly
Method of measuring total nitrogen: Kjehldal method; since 1995 LECO
analyser
Total mineral nitrogen: block 5, twice per year
Nitrate nitrogen: block 5, twice per year
Method of measuring nitrate nitrogen: Ion selective electrode; before
1985 colorimetrically (fenol sulphuric acid)
Ammonium nitrogen: block 5, twice per year
Method of measuring ammonium nitrogen: Ion selective electrode;
distilation
Soil bulk density or weight: occasionally
Method of measuring soil bulk density or weight: 100 cm3 cylinders
Other nutrients: Available P - Enger; K - Schachtschabel; Ca -
Mehlich, Schachtschabel; Mg, Schachtschabel
Atmospheric inputs: Wet N deposition (NO3 & NH4) is measured in
Ruzyne. Data obtained at abaout 100 sites in the Czech Republic
are available

Nearest meteorological station to the site: Airport Ruzyne which is 2.5
km from the site at coordinates 50.05 North, 14.20 East
