Abstract:
A collection of paleomagnetic rock samples including Jurassic volcanics and dolerites, Beacon Supergroup, Devonian-Carboniferous volcanics, Paleozoic Granitoids and Cambrian Volcanics and sediments were collected from the Daniels Range in North Victoria Land. Geological mapping was also conducted in the areas where samples were collected. The aim was to i) establish a polar wander path for the
... volcanic and sedimentary rocks of North Victoria Land, and compare this with the polar wander paths for Australia, New Zealand and other parts of Antarctica, ii) to test the reconstruction of Eastern Gondwana and iii) to check the possibility of large strike slip movements between Australia and Antarctica and within Antarctica since the early Paleozoic. Rock cores were drilled in situ for sampling purposes and analysed in a laboratory. The sites visited include the areas in the Southern Daniels Range, Allegro Valley, the Freyberg Mountains, Alamein Range, Gallipoli Heights, Outback Nunataks, Monument Nunataks, Quartzite Ranges, Bowers Mountains, Helliwell Hills, the Mariner Glacier region and the Lanterman Range. A total of 340 blocks were collected over the season.
