Abstract:
Glaciological work was carried out at Cape Bird to determine the glaciers margin structure. Initially, the hydrology of the region was investigated to determine the feasibility of measuring stream flows at the Northern colony to aide biologists in measuring movement and discharge of nutrients by the streams. ... in continuously changing braided channels. Disequilibrium in the glacier margin was thought to be responsible for the streams instability. The equilibrium of the Cape Bird glaciers were investigated and the structures associated with their moraines were examined. The ice cap glacier margin was studied along its length from the Northern colony to Shell glacier. To establish the relative rates of movement, 20 stakes were installed across the glacier margin and resurveyed in January. A pair of cairns were created as markers and the distance to the glacier front was measured. This allows future repeat measurements to determine rate of advance. Glacial geology observations were made and the glacier history and movement was determined. Samples of till were collected for radio carbon dating and oxygen isotope analysis.
