Summary
Abstract: Since 1985 the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) has conducted a series
of airborne experiments to study mesoscale weather systems (warm season
thunderstorms) in central United States, and more recently in the western
Pacific. The data gathered during these experiments are archived in the
following three data sets: Airborne Doppler Radar, Airborne Cloud Physics Data
and P-3 Flight Level Data. Airborne Doppler Radar archives raw data from a
3m-wavelength Doppler radar aboard a NOAA P-3 aircraft. The Doppler radar
measures reflectivity and the radial component of wind velocity. The Airborne
Cloud Physics data comes from a Knollenberg Probe, a laser imaging device which
measures precipitation particle size and type. The P-3 Flight Level data was
gathered by the standard instrumentation on the P-3 aircraft. The data
include measurements of pressure, temperature, dew point and wind and
navigational information.
