High-resolution meteorological forecasts are produced twelve times daily by the Pennsylvania State University/National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU/NCAR) mesoscale model (MM5v3.4).
The PSU/NCAR mesoscale model is a limited-area, nonhydrostatic or hydrostatic (Version 2 only), terrain-following sigma-coordinate model designed to simulate or predict mesoscale and regional-scale atmospheric ... circulation.
The Model is run on 6 processors on 8-CPU SGI Origin 2000. The 48-h and 12-h forecasts take approximately 2.5 and 0.5 wall clock hours to complete, respectively. Images for the Web Site are produced "on-the-fly" during model execution. The first images of a forecast are typically posted about 20 minutes after the model has started. Images are produced with the GEneral Meteorology PacKage (GEMPAK) software.
