Abstract:
The Population, Landscape And Climate Estimates (PLACE) dataset contains estimates of national-level aggregations of territorial extent and population size by biome, climate zone, coastal proximity, elevation and slope, a compendium of nearly 300 variables for 222 countries. This dataset is produced by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).
The data in Microsoft Excel (XLS) format are available from the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC).
Purpose:
To provide tabular data on environmental conditions (elevations, climate, coastal) in which people reside.
Quality
Longitude and latitude of the localities are recorded either as a range or a specific point. Such data may be explicit (i.e., actual latitude and longitude values) or implicit (e.g., a verbal location) from the original source of the record (e.g., specimen label). The data may be given as a specific point or they may be given as a range.
