Abstract: The weather data resides in 143 volumes, 'Telegrafischer Wetterbericht der K.K. Centralanstalt fur Meteorologie in Wien' (Oversize Foreign Met. Data) written in German. The data contained in these books are tables and maps of hourly, daily, and monthly weather data for Austria, other parts of Europe, Western Russia, and the Eastern North Atlantic. These data are for each individual month of the ... period 1873 to 1984. Parameters included in the hourly observation tables are surface air temperature, winds, sky cover, and weather. Variables displayed on the daily weather maps are: 850mb temperature and contours; and surface isobars, fronts, wind barbs, and weather. Daily parameters for the tables are maximum and minimum temperature. In addition there are monthly summaries of anomalies of temperature and rainfall, and temperature traces for each 30 day period. There are no maps before 1880. Before 1930, maps were for Europe and Western USSR only, then after 1930, maps included detailed maps of Austria with cloud, temperature, and wind observations, and the addition of the Western North Atlantic to the weather maps.
These books are part of the foreign meteorological data collection held by the NOAA Central Library in Washington, DC. Information in this collection dates back to the 18th century for daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual tabular summaries, and the 19th century for weather maps. These data are the result of foreign exchange agreements, but the collection has not been updated since 1983.
