Abstract:
The daily and weekly weather data resides in 33 books, 'Weekly Weather Reports of the Meteorological Office' (C/de 25 AO-9). The data contained in these books are tables and maps of daily and weekly surface pressure, temperature, rainfall, cloudiness, and winds for the British Isles. These are for each week of the period 1878 to 1938. There are daily weather maps containing data on clouds, ... temperature, winds, sea, and pressure. These maps cover all of Europe for call number C/de 25 AO-9 and United States and Eastern Canada in addition to Europe for call number C/de 25 AO-11 (next description). The weekly parameters incorporated in the data tables are the following: mean temperature and rainfall; highest and lowest temperature for the week; number of days of rainfall; and total rainfall deviation from normal.
The daily, weekly, monthly, and annual climate data resides in 14 books, 'British Meteorological Yearbook' (C/de 25 AO-11). The data contained in these books are hourly surface weather observation tables, daily, weekly, monthly, and annual surface climatic data for the British Isles, and daily weather maps for Europe, North Atlantic, and North America. These data are for each month or year of the period 1908 to 1921. Parameters included in the hourly observations are pressure, temperature, wind, sunshine, cloudiness, rainfall, and humidity.
Weekly data included in these data are the following: upper-level temperature, humidity, and winds; mean, highest, and lowest surface temperature; mean of the daily maximum, minimum, and mean air and ground temperature; number of rain days; rain amounts; duration of wind speeds; extreme wind direction and velocity; and highest, lowest, and mean sea-surface temperature. In addition, there are daily magnetic readings for the British Isles tabulated.
Monthly variables incorporated in these data are the following: mean pressure, temperature, and sunshine hours; mean maximum and minimum temperature; cloud amount; sunshine hours; absolute maximum and minimum temperature; pressure difference from average; number of days of precipitation, snow, hail, thunderstorms; total rainfall; maximum 24 hour rainfall; and wind direction and speed frequency.
The following annual parameters are included in these data: mean temperature, pressure, humidity, and cloud amounts; mean maximum and minimum temperature; absolute maximum and minimum temperature; wind direction and speed frequency; daily mean sunshine hours; per cent possible sunshine; total rainfall, maximum 24 hour rainfall; number of days of precipitation, precipitation greater than a certain intensity, snow, hail, thunderstorms, and fog. The difference from the average for these variables is also tabulated.
Daily synoptic charts covering Europe, North Atlantic, and North America are included in these data sets, featuring isobars and winds. Monthly and annual charts display pressure, wind, storm tracks, mean temperature and sunshine, and total rainfall.
These books are part of the foreign meteorological data collection held by the NOAA Central Library in Washington, DC. Information in this collection dates back to the 18th century for daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual tabular summaries, and the 19th century for weather maps. These data are the result of foreign exchange agreements, but the collection has not been updated since 1983.
