Abstract:
The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) products are produced from AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) and TOVS (TIROS Opertional Vertical Sounder)data collected by the TIROS-N/NOAA 6/7/8/9 series of polar orbiting satellites. TOVS data is used to calibrate AVHRR data for atmospheric effects. The model used to produce SST's makes use of the near-IR channel (channel 3) and the two IR
... channels (channels 4 and 5) of the AVHRR instrument. This tape is archived by SDSD every week. It contains 8 days of data (7 before 11/1/86) of 8 km resolution (50 km before 11/17/81). Other SST products are derived from these SST observations. ** From May 1973 to February 1979 the data were derived from an earlier generation of satellites. These data are archived on 7 track 556 bpi tapes (May 1973 - March 1974) or 800 bpi tapes (March 1974 - February 1979) **Unless otherwise noted, the documentation of this dataset in CLIC is for data for 1979 - Present.
