Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The NGDC marine geology inventory, is a computerized inventory of all marine geology data archived by, and available through NGDC, regardless of data format. The inventory includes collecting institution, ship, cruise, and sample identifier, date, latitude/longitude, water depth in corrected meters, type of sampling device, and type(s) of descriptive/analytical data available through
... NGDC by sample within a report, data file, etc. Inventory information is included for over 850 reports/data sets, covering over 140,000 seafloor samples. Data sources include academic institutions, NOAA, other U.S. government agencies, foreign countries, and a few private companies. The inventory is searchable on any parameter/combination of parameters. Searches are available online via Internet using a forms interface, or through an ArcIMS interactive map. Outputs include files and listings. A few of the data types inventoried are: sediment and rock descriptions, grain size, geochemistry, mineralogy, petrology, micropaleontology, geochronology, engineering properties, sediment acoustics, seafloor photos, and paleomagnetism. Inventory searches are free online.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: The Marine Geology Inventory provides links to downloadable data, images, and information pertaining to the data sets inventoried. Most original paper reports are now available online as .PDF files, as well.
