Abstract:
The objective of this project is to develop generalized two-way data format translators (EOSGIS) between HDF-EOS and ARC/INFO format. The EOSGIS translators will be able to translate HDF-EOS swath, grid and point data to ARC/INFO coverage and grid formats, or vice versa. The translators will be developed using C language to access HDF-EOS and ARC/INFO data. The developed ... translators will be distributed on the World Wide Web as public domain software and users will be able to directly download translators and their documentation.
This project will facilitate data distribution, sharing and utilization. It will enhance global change research and broaden the usage of HDF-EOS data to non-global change communities. The availability of HDF-EOS data to GIS will increase EOS data analysis power since GIS is a power tool for global change research. After EOSGIS translators are added to HDF-EOS tools, they will increase the data ingestion capability of EOSDIS and help global change researers on data integration and analysis.
Using the three HDF-EOS models and the ARC/INFO data formats as a basis, we developed EOSGIS two-way translators. The translators written in C are generalized programs that can translate any HDF-EOS data. Grid and swath models are translated to ARC/INFO grid ASCII and GeoTIFF formats; and the point model is translated to the ArcView shape point format.
Use Constraints
Translators are available for the following platforms: SGI IRIX 5.3, SUN Solaris 2.6, Windows 95/NT
The EOSGIS translators are developed and maintained by Laboratory of Advance Information Technologies and Standards, Center for Earth Observation and Space Research, George Mason University.
