Abstract:
This Atlantic historical hurricane data covers the entire Atlantic and includes all storms (tropical storms and all categories of hurricanes). The storm tracts are in the form of arcs.
Purpose:
Data is courtesy of Chris Landsea (Colorado State University). The North Atlantic 'best track' is maintained by the forecasters and researchers at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Fl. Free access of this data and documentation were provided by Dr. Robert Sheets - Dir. of NHC.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION: Hurricane information was downloaded from the Purdue historical hurricane site. The textual information was imported into Excel, cleaned and saved as a .dbf file. This file was then converted to shapefiles with attributes using a script in ARC/INFO 7.1.1. The shapefiles were aggregated by decade and converted to shapefiles in ArcView 3.0a.
