Summary
Abstract:
IndOBIS Catalogue of Life (IndOBIS CoL, http://www.indobis.org/ ) is a work in progress that aims at collating baseline information on known biota from Indian Ocean. Other than listing valid scientific name of a species, IndOBIS CoL also collates data on synonyms, common names, detailed taxon hierarchy and occurrence data. In December 2005, Dataset 1 containing 13,750 species records (12,592 ... synonyms, and 5,253 common names) was released. This dataset 1 was culled out from IndFauna, electronic catalogue of known Indian fauna was developed during 2000-2005 with aim to produce single source catalogue of known Indian fauna. This is accessible at http://www.ncbi.org.in/. Hence, IndOBIS Dataset 1 is the marine subset of IndFauna - which has been extracted, and then subjected to scrutiny by a group of editors that forms the core team of IndOBIS. This data set was appended with additional 6999 species records, mostly covering species recorded from other regions of Indian Ocean but beyond Indian Seas. Hence, together baseline data on 20,749 species records currently crawled by the OBIS system. These records include 20,749 valid scientific names, 13,432 synonyms, 5,829 common names and 31,576 occurrence details (as on May 6, 2006). Habitat coverage: Coastal, Mangrove, Backwaters, Estuarine, Marine, Littoral, Sublittoral, Islands, Lagoons, Islands. Total number of taxa 20,749 species records (20,749 scientific names, 13,432 synonyms, 5,829 common names, 31,576 occurrences).

Quality
- In case of IndOBIS Catalogue of Life (IndOBIS CoL) secondary sources of literature is the prime source of data. The main focus is on published literature including research papers, faunas / floras, and monographs as sources of authentic and reviewed information. Data collated together by the "Data Managers" is then reviewed and verified by team of investigators for its ... authenticity, and validity. As and when required and felt essential we seek help from the domain experts, mainly seasoned taxonomists on given group of organisms. - In order to ensure quality, authenticity and validity of the data collated in IndOBIS CoL a informal network of "Taxon Editors" is being developed. These experts would be within and outside Indian Ocean region, but with experience of working in Indian Ocean region. IndOBIS would generate "Taxon Editors Reports" which would be scrutinized by these taxon editors either online and offline. - In Case of data associated with specimens in natural history museums, we only collate the data as it is recorded with the labels of the specimens. However, we use gazetteers to collect latitude and longitude data of locality from which the specimen has been sampled, which is appended along with the original data.
