Abstract:
The Miombo Woodlands system is taken to include all those Southern and Central African ecosystems which occur under a hot, subhumid, seasonally-wet climate on soils derived from acid crystalline geologies. The components of this system include woodlands on well-drained soils, and hydromorphic grasslands (called dambos) in drainage lines. ... Miombo occupy about 5 million square km, and support about 100 million people with food, fuel, building materials, medicines and water.
The Miombo comprises ecosystems in seasonal tropical regions. Miombo woodland is the dominant vegetation type of the Central African plateau, extending from Tanzania and the democratic Republic of Congo (formaly Zaire), through Zambia, Malawi and eastern Angola, to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Human activities have affected the dynamics of the miombo: converting woodland to cultivated land; harvesting for wood and fuel; burning and grazing by livestock. In order to understand how ecological and social processes change as land use is intensified, the International Geosphere Biosphere Program (IGBP) initiated the Miombo Network. The Miombo Network is an activity of the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP), IGBP Land Use and Land Cover Change (LUCC) core project, the IGBP System for Analysis, Research and Training (START), and the World Climate Research Program (WCRP).
The Miombo CD-ROM project has made many widely available datasets for the Southern African region on one medium for the research community. All datasets are standardized in terms of geographical projection and coordinates. Data visulaization tools were added to the CD-ROM. Primary datasets include digital elevation models, hydrological data, administrative boundaries, daily and monthly climate datasets, vegetation data, ecological parameters, land cover, land use, population data, socio-economic indicators and emissions data.
