Abstract:
The "Carbon Budgets, Agroforestry Ecosystems, and Global Climate
Change in the Northern Great Plains" dataset establishes
ecosystem carbon budgets toward the goal of maximizing carbon
storage and continued agricultural productivity. Its purpose is
to determine from literature and data base sources the carbon
density in soil, litter, below ground phytomass and above ground
phytomass of cover types
... (natural and agricultural) in the
northern Great Plains. And to determine from literature, data
base sources, and limited data collection, carbon storage
dynamics of cover types in the northern Great Plains. Also it is
to integrate the information collected into a carbon budget for
sample landscapes in the northern Great Plains which include
representative ecosystem types such as field, set-aside acres,
windbreaks, riparian forests, and palustrine wetlands. And to
examine the potential for carbon sequestering by managing the
landscape ecosystem to maximize carbon storage while also
maintaining agricultural production.
Collection Organization: South Dakota State University.
Collection Methodology: This project takes an ecosystem or
landscape level approach toward assessment of the carbon budget
of agroecosystems and their role in the global carbon cycle and
possible climate change. Phase 1 of the research involved a
complete review of the carbon budget literature and of ongoing
and AES projects, culminating in development of a static carbon
budget for several actual S.D. landscapes. Phase 2 involves
development of a dynamic component to estimate whether our
landscapes are exacerbating or remediating a possible greenhouse
effect warming. Phase 3 developed management alternatives to
maximize carbon storage in the landscape while also maintaining
high agricultural production.
Collection Frequency: On-going research.
Update Characteristics: On-going.
