The main activity done by the project was the Vidal 97 campaign. The campaign
aim was to study the middle-oceanic channel geological development from its
final zone, where there is an interaction with the Barracuda fracture zone, to
its distal foothills in the Amazon turbidite system, the definition of its main
tributaries, as well as its possible relation with the distal Orinoco
... turbidite
system. This was obtained by means of the following specific objectives:
-Detailed bathymetry of: (I) Vidal Channel mouth, in the Barracuda Fracture
Zone; (II) channel complete course, and (III) Vidal Channel zone, to recognize
the existence of tributaries in that zone.
-Seismic high transversal resolution profiles to: (IV) Fracture zone and
Barracuda deep-sea plain, to recognize its sedimentary filled and the relation
with the tectonics structures; (V) Vidal Valley, to identify its recent
morpho-sedimentary characteristics; and (VI) in the tributary zone, to identify
its activity as canal of main valley flows.
-To do bathymetric profiles and seismic between the distal zone of the
Orinoco's turbidite system and the Vidal Channel.
The data obtained and the technical used during the campaign were:
-6500 km2 of bathymetric cover with multibeam echo sound SIMRAD EM12
-6045 km of high geologic echo sounder profiles TOPAS
-1865 km of high resolution bolt guns profiles Sleeve-gun
-6045 km of magnetometric profiles with a proton magnetometer GEOMETRICS G-876
-6045 km of gravimetric profiles with a BELL gravimeter
-6045 km of echo sound SIMRAD profiles
En Espanol: La principal actividad realizada dentro del Proyecto consistio en
la Campana Vidal 97.
El objetivo fundamental de la Campana fue el estudio de la evolucion geologica
del Canal Medio-Oceanico de Vidal desde su zona final, donde interacciona con
la Zona de Fractura de Barracuda, hasta su zona proximal en las estribaciones
distales del sistema turbiditico del Amazonas, la definicion de sus principales
tributarios, asi como la comprobacion de su posible relacion con el sistema
turbiditico distal del Orinoco. Esto se consiguio mediante los siguientes
objetivos especificos:
-Realizacion de una batimetria detallada de: (I) la desembocadura del Canal de
Vidal, en la Zona de Fractura de Barracuda; (II) el curso completo del canal, y
(III) la zona sur del Canal de Vidal, para reconocer la existencia de
tributarios en esa zona.
-Realizacion de perfiles sismicos de alta resolucion transversales a:(IV) la
Zona de Fractura y Llanura Abisal de Barracuda, reconocer su relleno
sedimentario y la relacion con las estructuras tectonicas; (V) al Valle de
Vidal, para identificar sus caracteristicas morfo-sedimentarias recientes; y
(VI) en la zona de tributarios, para reconocer su actividad como conducto de
flujos al valle principal.
-Realizar perfiles de batimetria y sismica entre la zona distal del Sistema
Turbiditico del Orinoco y el Canal de Vidal.
Los datos obtenidos y las tecnicas utilizadas durante la campana fueron:
-65.00 km2 de recubrimiento batimetrico con ecosonda multihaz SIMRAD EM12
-6.045 km de perfiles de sonda geologica de ultra-alta resolucion TOPAS
-1.865km de perfiles de canones de aire de alta resolucion Sleeve-gun
-6.045 km de perfiles de magnetometria con un manetometro de protones
