Abstract:
The Washington State Department of Ecology has conducted monthly water quality monitoring at hundreds of stream stations throughout the state since before 1959. Currently, the Stream Monitoring Unit collects water samples from about 82 stations each year. About 20 "basin" stations are monitored for one year (sometimes returning every five years) and 62 "long-term" stations are monitored every year. We monitor by water year (October through September). Monitored constituents (parameters) include temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, total suspended solids, fecal coliform bacteria, ammonia, nitrate plus nitrite, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus, and, at most stations, discharge. Dissolved metals are monitored every other month at a few stations. We occasionally sample other constituents as well. In 2001 we implemented a program to collect temperature data at 30-minute intervals. Recording instruments were deployed and air and water temperature data were collected at 44 long-term stations from June through September. The Water Quality Index (WQI) is a unitless number ranging from 10 to 100 that is intended to represent general water quality based on our routine monitoring of conventional constituents (metals, for example, are not included). A higher number is indicative of better water quality. For some constituents, the index expresses results relative to levels required to maintain beneficial uses (based on criteria in Washington.s Water Quality Standards, WAC 173-201A). For other constituents (nutrient and sediment measures) where standards are not specific, results are expressed relative to expected conditions in a given region. Multiple constituents are combined and results aggregated over time to produce a single score for each station. Results for individual stations are available through the "data access" link, above.
